Archaeology:
Collections

The large numbers of excavations that has taken place in Washington over the years has led to the accumulation of a vast body of archaeological material. This mainly consists of the actual artifacts found during excavations. Everything from the smallest flake, to the heaviest millstone has to been kept for future Small Basketreference.   Where it is not desirable to place archaeological materials on display they must be catalogued and kept in a safe and stored in such as way as to prevent its physical decay so that the materails are available for future researchers.

Currently, Washington state does not have a main 'clearing house' where objects from excavations are conserved, researched and published.  As a result, most of the items have been deposited at local museums.  A variety of private, state, tribal, and federal agency representatives are in the process of developing curation standards for the state of Washington.
