Historic Sites: State Historic Preservation Officer, Dr. Allyson Brooks, is delighted to announce that the Heritage Barn Advisory Committee awarded eighteen rehabilitation grants to owners of historic barns across the state. “Historic Barns are an authentic element of our agricultural landscape and an essential ingredient of Washington State’s working lands,” stated Dr. Brooks. “It is my pleasure to be able to announce that Washington State is assisting working farms with the preservation of their historic structures.” Grants ranging from $2,800 to just over $52,000 were awarded to 18 barn owners in 15 counties; 16 of these grants will assist in the rehabilitation of barns on working farms. Competition for grant funding ran extremely high, as the state received more than 100 applications seeking over $2.1 million in funding. In total, the state awarded nearly $460,000 in grant funds towards the preservation of Heritage Barns. The Heritage Barn Advisory Committee is responsible for reviewing applications and recommending grant awards. “We are simply thrilled with this first response,” stated committee chair Jerri Honeyford. “I hope we can help more farmers keep these wonderful American structures in the future.” Despite the Heritage Barn Preservation Initiative being a new program, responses from barn owners interested in participating was immediate: within the first ten months of the program the Washington State Advisory Council on Historic Preservation designated nearly 300 barns as Washington State Heritage Barns. Dr. Brooks noted the remarkable level of interest and participation given that this was the inaugural year of the Heritage Barn Preservation Initiative. “The outpouring of historic barn owners who want their barns registered with the state as a way of recognizing the historic and cultural significance of these structures, combined with the tremendous number of grant requests, demonstrates that the citizens of Washington State truly value preserving their agricultural history”. The next deadline for barn owners interested in nominating their barn to the Heritage Barn Register is April 30, 2008. The following barns received grants through the Heritage Barn Grant Program:
